Swansea, U.K. – March 20th, 2006 Enfis announces a breakthrough in lighting power density using its next generation Smart MW-LED (Multi-Watt Light Emitting Diode) Light Engine technology.
The company has demonstrated the capability for world-beating luminous power density of 500 lm/cm2 in a package emitting > 8000 Lumens of white light from a 16cm2 aperture.
The same LED package can produce white light using a combination of four individually addressable colours to create up to 4.3 Billion individual colours including a large range of white colour temperatures.
Record radiant power density of 8000 mW/cm2 is demonstrated in red colours from an array giving out 4000mW from a 7x7mm aperture which is equivalent to 1800 lumens/cm2 luminous power density.
This breakthrough technology is an important milestone for high power solid-state lighting and other LED applications where high power is required from a small spot size. Having the ability to control 4 wavelengths also allows the possibility of changing the colour temperature whilst maintaining a higher Colour Rendering Index (CRI or Ra) which is important for the quality of the light when illuminating objects. Enfis offers a truly high power smart integrated light source which offers unique advantages over other products in the market. Our light engine expertise is focussed on innovation and integration of the elements shown in

The integration of the MW-LED array, thermal management, primary optics and power electronics including patent-pending digital smart array control and feedback features provide a light source that is truly plug-and-play. This light engine can maintain a constant light output throughout the lifetime of the light engine and across the range of ambient conditions expected for these lighting devices. Many of the elements of our light engines have patents pending.
Development product trials have now been completed which demonstrate great improvements in the power capability of our MW-LED light engines and in particular a world leading improvement in the light output power density from our MW-LED arrays. The data shown in Figure 2 identifies the typical characteristics which may be compared between the Enfis results and some of the best commercial suppliers of single chip solutions (Lumileds) and multi-chip on tile solutions (Lamina Ceramics).
Headline figures are radiant light power densities of 3700 mW/cm2 from our MW-200-RED array with > 8000 Lumens of white light from our MW-400-RGBA smart array. The Enfis MW-400 light engine products are suitable for operation up to 600 Watts. This high power is enabled through key developments and innovation in thermal management and power control. Our focus on integration aims to provide a plug-and-play light engine solution that allows the customer to focus on their application and product design.
Due to the innovative design of the MW-LED array architecture the arrays may be tiled together to form much larger arrays emitting many tens of thousands of Lumens when integrated successfully with thermal management hardware. Because of the high luminous power density the size of such an array will tend to occupy a smaller footprint than comparable systems made by other commercial offerings.

Enfis is developing this MW-LED array light engine technology in a variety of sizes and wavelengths to suit the growing number of high power applications that may be fulfilled using our technology. Wavelengths into the UV are now available such as our 370nm MW-LED array technology for a variety of industrial applications and also the near infra-red up to 980nm.
In addition, our next generation MW-LED arrays are already being manufactured for prototype approval which will give >50% increase in the luminous and radiant power densities over the MW-400 white light figures already revealed in this announcement.

“Enfis has been developing MW-LED light engine technology over the last three years. The amount of light that can be generated using MW-LED technology has been constantly increasing during this development phase.”, commented Dr Gareth Jones, CTO of Enfis.
“One of the most important aspects of achieving higher brightness and power density levels in MW-LED light engines is dealing with the heat generated. Enfis approach to light engine production is the integration of the MW-LED arrays with low thermal resistance and efficient thermal management systems leading to the ability to drive the arrays at much high powers than traditional LED offerings. In addition, our high density packaging approach leads to a much higher light power density.
Our Innovative MW-LED arrays are integrated into light engines to deliver light where it's needed in a reliable and controllable manner.”, added Dr Jones.
The combination of multiple wavelengths (colours) of controllable light using our integrated digital smart array control technology allows the seamless changing of colours over a wide colour gamut with high colour rendering. This can be seen in for one of our MW-400-RGBA light engines where the colour change is simply achieved using a digital signal. Optical feedback within the LED array itself is able to keep colour balance and maintain this over wide ranges of intensity thus solving the issue of maintaining colour whilst dimming.

The base MW-LED array package has been designed to provide ultra-low thermal resistance whilst maintaining reliability and mechanical stability suitable for use in a variety of applications.
We have demonstrated the highest LED chip packaging density currently in the market providing a truly versatile light source. Patent-pending smart array technology provides independent 4-colour control of the light intensity so that the product will maintain colour balance and light intensity over a range of intensities and ambient temperatures for demanding illumination applications.
Simply purchasing commercial LEDs from suppliers and fitting them into systems is not sufficient to achieve the high brightness or high powers demonstrated by Enfis. “As a highly focused innovative light engine technology company, Enfis is able to offer state-of-the-art MW-LED array light engines using our patent-pending smart array technology to meet the needs of the illumination markets..”, stated Shaun Oxenham, CEO of Enfis.
“We are able to offer standardised light engines and also custom solutions for volume applications. Enfis derives great pleasure from exceeding our customer’s expectations and welcomes the opportunity to prove our MW-LED light engines are a compelling solution for all illumination applications.”
